Welcome back, crafty friends!
Hold onto your stocking caps because today you’re in for a real treat! Chris has been working like Santa’s elf on a beautiful holiday decor project for her home, and in this post you’ll get to see the amazing results of her craftiness!
Chris combined handmade miniature houses and her favorite Tim Holtz embellishments into a sweet paper mache suitcase vignette. And — amazingly — Chris engineered it so that everything in this project fits in the suitcase for easy storage!
Chris started by covering the suitcase with patterned paper. I love the red plaid she chose for the outside! The inside has a patchwork of different patterns which add to the vintage feel. Chris kept the embellishments inside the lid fairly flat so as not to take up a lot of room when the suitcase is closed. Notice that she included several photos of her daughters in the collage inside the lid, which makes this a very special family keepsake!
In order to have a place for the houses to sit high enough to be visible, Chris created a “false bottom” which is visible in the photo below. This is simply a piece of chipboard, covered with paper and cut to extend across the suitcase. It rests securely on the edges of the suitcase and provides a space for the little houses and trees.
Chris made the church and two houses using the collection of Tim Holtz miniature house dies. In order to get everything just right, she practiced by making a couple of prototypes to figure out how she wanted the little buildings to look before making the final versions. Check out the details: little snowballs and logs next to the houses. Can you spot the thimble?
In the evening, the houses glow with the tea lights, and the wreath in back lights up! Each roof sparkles with snow and Chris tinted the trees to just the right shade of green. As a final touch, the curved felt “snow” in front of the suitcase provides a space for a house and more trees as it draws the eye in to this charming vignette.
This is just about the sweetest project EVER! If you’re inspired to make something like it, Chris has provided a supply list which should get you started! We have everything you need at Memory Bound so stop in soon!
