Meet Katie!

Jun 15th

Hello, Memory Bound Friends!

At Memory Bound we believe we have the most talented, creative, and fun staff and we thought it would be fun for you all to get to know our little MB family a bit better! So each week we are going to introduce you to one of our staff members! We hope you enjoy!

This week we are featuring Katie! Many of our customers know Katie from her wonderfully creative and fun classes, her joyful laugh, and her beautiful smile. If you’ve been in one of Katie’s classes (her beautiful Christmas cards, planner workshops, or mini books), you’ve no doubt noticed her great organizational skills — she’s a Planner Girl, after all!  And her background as a classroom teacher means that she’s a terrific instructor for Memory Bound. Katie has a knack for breaking down techniques into simple, doable steps…and helping her students relax and have a great time in the process! Katie’s amazing planners and mini books are filled with her beautiful handwriting and gorgeous photos. Whatever she’s creating (Christmas cards, albums, scrapbooks, or planner pages), Katie has a unique style of combining products and techniques to really bring a project together! As a co-worker, there’s always fun to be had when Katie is around! Whether it’s a practical joke or a funny story, she always brightens our days. 🙂

Here’s a little more from Katie!

I have lived in Ankeny most of my life and this is where I met my husband, Jason. No, we are not high-school sweethearts, though I did have a terrible crush on him! We actually started to date when we were seniors at Iowa State and haven’t been apart since! We have two boys Sam (my oldest) and Jack (the little guy) that keep us on our toes figuring out every new stage of parenting! Thank goodness we all have a good sense of humor and chalk up these adventures to great stories to share and scrapbook!

I  really don’t have an expertise in paper crafting, though at this time I am loving planning and all my planner products! Here’s a little memory keeping in my planners!

I would have to say my “expertise” is talking and listening to our customers and their stories. Everyone who comes in the store has a story to share or is working on telling a story in some manner. From marriages, graduations, birthdays, new additions to a family, homecomings as well as passing of friends, loved ones or furry friends, I am lucky and honored to help people gather items to help tell, share and preserve their stories.

I love, love, love mini albums and mini books (not sure if there is a difference)! I find it a great way to get a story shared and documented in a short amount of time!

When your child is performing, playing or doing something that you are watching them, they ALWAYS look for you. I love capturing that moment with my boys!

I took this selfie with our dear Moose who passed away a little over a year ago.I am so happy that I have this little memory of her!

My favorite crafting tool is anything I can get my hands on! Right now I love planners, stamping with my Misit, die cuts and mini-albums. I am super picky about my pens and at this time I am using my LePens as well as my Uni-Ball pens in my planners and for journaling. Another pen I just discovered is the Water-Based White Sharpie Marker…a great alternative to the White Uni-Ball pen.

Every so often I will play around creating some cards. Since I have discovered the Misti…I have played around with creating cards even more!

I must say I do not have a company that I don’t like, because I am definitely a picker and chooser from everything that is out there! I am drawn towards bright colors from Doodlebug, Echo Park and Simple Stories. I love Taylored Expressions, Lawn Fawn, Technique Tuesday and My Favorite Things Stamp Sets and Dies. Throw in some Washi Tape and I am in heaven!

Here’s a favorite “mini” I create with a Simple Stories Collection.

If you are heading this way, stopping at Memory Bound is a no-brainer!! People will call and ask if it really would be “worth their time to stop”…and our answer is always yes, you won’t be disappointed. Depending on the time of year you are headed in this direction, I would suggest checking out the Junk Jubilees in the Fall and Spring, take a walk in the Sculpture Garden in Downtown Des Monies and then head over to the East Village. In April, the Drake Relays is always a must for our family and August, head to the Iowa State Fair! There’s so many places to suggest: Farmers Markets, Local Independent Bookstores and Quilt Stores, The Des Moines Art Festival or Nightfall on the River for great music!

There are so many things I love about Memory Bound! First, just being around all that paper and all the fun products, you can’t help but get inspired by just being IN the store! The atmosphere is always friendly, fun and you will definitely hear laughter! The gals I work with are all amazing in their own ways and believe it or not, we all get along!! I have many, many, many stories I could share that will give you a good belly laugh, but all you need to do is listen while shopping and I am sure you will overhear a tale or two about the shenanigans that go on at the store and with all of us gals! If you are lucky, you may actually witness one in progress because you just never know what will happen at a visit to Memory Bound!

PS
While taking pictures for this blog post, I came into the kitchen to find Jack looking through and enjoying the mini albums that I had created. Check out that smile/giggle! That is what makes memory keeping so worth while!
